In 1790 and 1791 A.D. some priests and pamphleteers attempted
to portray Jesus as the first of the revolutionaries. They did not bring
about a real change of thought. In subsequent years the Revolution was
violently anti-religious.
Jesus was a true sans-culotte, a full blooded republican. He developed
all the principles of morale quality and the purest patriotism. He faced
every danger, he rebelled against the great who in all periods have abused
their powers. He castigated the harshness of the rich; he attacked the pride
of kings and priests. The Son of God rebelled against the aristocrats of the
nation. Meditate on this important truth, my brothers. He did not cease to
be indignant in public about the tyrants of the people, those who exacted
unjust taxes, the despots of thought, all the oppressors. The unworthy
aristocrats deceived the multitudes who groveled before their pride: they
instilled into the vile soul of their slaves the rage which drove them
against the liberator of humanity. My brothers, having said this I would die
happy: 'It was the aristocracy which crucified the Son of God.
