The Separation law (9 December 1905)

Article 1. The Republic safeguards freedom of conscience. It guarantees the free practice of worship, restricted solely by the restrictions decreed below in the interest of public order.

Article 2. The Republic does not recognize, pay wages for or subsidize any form of religion. As a result, from the 1 January following the promulgation of the present laws, all expenses relating to the practices of religion 41 be removed from the budget of the state, the departments and there communes.
