Handout #267

The encyclical Pascendi

(8 September 1907).  The propositions which follow are the propositions which are condemned, for the most part extracts from Loisy's books.  Pascendi gives akind of stereotyped portrait of the modernist. But no individual modernist ever had all these features.

Modernists combine and are a mixture of several personalities: the philosopher, the believer, the theologian, the historian, the critic, the apologist, the reformer. It is necessary to disentangle these figures if we want to gain a thorough knowledge of their system and take account of the principles and the consequences of their doctrines.

Taking in the whole system at a glance, who could fail to be amazed that we are defining the meeting point of all heresies? Modernists ruin not only the Catholic religion but, as we have already suggested, all religion.
