Handout #103

Decisions on the Council of Rome (1074-Gregory VII)

Anyone who has been promoted by simony, that is to say at the price of money, to one of the sacred orders or to a position in the church, shall not be able henceforth to exercise any ministry in the holy church. Those who obtain churches at the price of money lose these churches. From henceforth no one can buy or sell churches.

Those who have committed the crime of fornication (married priests) cannot celebrate the mass nor perform in minor orders at the altar.

We also resolve that the people may not attend the offices of those who have scorned our constitutions - which are those of the holy fathers themselves - so that those whom neither the love of God nor the dignity of their functions can correct should be humiliated by lack of human respect and by the reproof of the people.
