III. Session #3--How Do We Pray?

A.

Prayer of Petition.

1.

General intercessions at mass.
2. When we "ask" God for something.
3. Example: Agony in the Garden--Mark 14:32-36

B.

Prayer of Praise.

1.

When your heart is so full of the love of God and you can't say anything except, "I love you Lord."

2.

It's a joyfulness with your cup overflowing.

3.

Example: 1st Chronicles 13:5-8

C.

Prayer of Psalms--Singing.

1.

St. Augustine says, "When we sing we pray twice."
2. Psalms are songs to be sung.
3. Songs are to be sung in joyfulness in and out of Church.
4. Example: Luke 1:46-55

D.

Prayer of Thanksgiving.

1.

A prayer of thanks for answered or unanswered prayer.
2. It's a time to give back to God something that he has given you.
3. Example: Mark 5:1-20...tell the story and then read verse 20.

E.

Prayer of Lamentation.

1.

It's a prayer of woe.  Poor me, sort of like Job!
2. It's a crying out to God "WHY?"
3. It's a prayer of anger with God.
4. Example: Jeremiah 20:7-18

F.

Prayer of Contemplation.

1.

It's a specialized prayer of just "being with God."
2. No petitions, no praise, no thankfulness, no lamentation.
3. It's placing yourself in the arms of the Lord as a little child.
4. It's a prayer form that takes practice to master and be comfortable with in quiet solitude with just you and God alone in total trust.

If there is time Father Terry will teach contemplative prayer to the group, but it takes at least 20 minutes.
